When a soldier goes on leave and does not return, it is called AWL (Absent without leave).

The Army waits for 28 days for the absentee soldier to return. Meanwhile, army activates all concerned agenicies.
After 28 days, the Military police searches for the absentee in his area or nearby locality. They also take help from civil police. If found, military police take him into custody and then a COI (Court of inquiry) is scheduled, followed by a court martial.
If not found, army intelligence along with civil police continue to search for him.
